The Permanent Secretary for Youth and Sports submitted a request on January 20, 2025, seeking approval for Hon. Jese Saukuru to travel to New Zealand in support of the Fiji Sports Council’s Under-20 Rugby Sevens team from January 28 to February 5, 2025. This travel was arranged following an invitation from the Fiji Sports Council, and the request was granted.

However, the application notably did not mention if Hon. Saukuru would be accompanied by his spouse. While it is permissible for Ministers to travel with their spouses on official business—either at their own expense or when sponsored by the host country—such details must be explicitly included in the original request. These arrangements are evaluated individually to ensure transparency.

In the wake of inquiries regarding this trip and various concerns involving the Fiji Sports Council, which operates under the auspices of Minister Saukuru, a meeting between the Minister and relevant parties has been scheduled for further discussion.

Concerning the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), it is important to recognize that the 2013 Constitution, under Section 115(6), stipulates its independence. Consequently, no directives or control can be exercised by myself or the Government over this commission.

This situation highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in public service, ensuring that all official travel requests are clearly articulated and adhere to constitutional guidelines. The dialogue initiated regarding Hon. Saukuru’s travel arrangements reflects a commitment to uphold these principles within the government.
