Spotify has announced that it will delete accounts that fail to pass new age verification checks within a 90-day period. This move is aimed at restricting access to explicit music and videos for younger teenagers and children amid growing concerns about online safety.
In a recent update on its website, Spotify clarified its minimum age requirement and emphasized the importance of complying with these new regulations. “You cannot use Spotify if you don’t meet the minimum age requirements for the market you’re in,” the platform stated. Users will face a pop-up notification prompting them to verify their age through Yoti, a face-scanning app designed to estimate age. If users are determined to be underage, they will be required to undergo an additional ID verification process.
While users can opt out of the age verification process, doing so will restrict their access to adult-rated music videos. Spotify, which caters to users as young as 13, has faced scrutiny in the past for hosting content deemed inappropriate for younger audiences, including explicit podcasts.
This initiative aligns with the recent implementation of the Online Safety Act in Britain, which compels technology companies to enforce age restrictions for accessing adult content. Under these new regulations, companies that do not comply risk hefty fines, potentially reaching up to 10% of their total revenue. In addition to Spotify, various platforms, including Pornhub and social media sites like Reddit and X (formerly Twitter), are now required to introduce similar age verification measures.
The online safety enhancements have spurred a significant response from the public, leading to a petition against the Online Safety Act, which has garnered over 420,000 signatures. Despite this backlash, the government has asserted its commitment to the law, stating there are no plans to repeal it.
