Sporting Kansas City has made a significant move to enhance its soccer operations by appointing David Lee as the Chief Soccer Officer (CSO) and General Manager. This announcement, made on Tuesday, marks a new era for the club, with Lee stepping into a prominent leadership role that encompasses all aspects of the team’s soccer-related activities. He has committed to a seven-year contract, extending through 2032.
Lee will manage first-team roster arrangements, player recruitment, scouting, analytics, and technical staff oversight. He will also play a key role in the development of Sporting KC II and the Sporting KC Academy. Reporting directly to the club’s ownership, Lee will have a significant influence over Sporting Director Mike Burns and interim head coach Kerry Zavagnin.
Previously, Lee dedicated 11 years to New York City FC (NYCFC), ascending to the role of Sporting Director. His tenure at NYCFC was marked by successful player recruitment and scouting operations. Since joining NYCFC’s inaugural technical staff in 2014, Lee’s progression to Technical Director in 2017 and then Sporting Director in 2019 showcases his expertise and leadership within the soccer industry. NYCFC’s accomplishments under his leadership include boasting the most points in Major League Soccer (MLS) since his appointment as CSO in 2020.
Co-Principal Owner Michael Illig expressed the importance of Lee’s appointment, emphasizing the extensive global search undertaken before selecting him. Illig highlighted Lee’s fresh perspective, international experience, and ambitious drive as pivotal in aiming for the highest levels of MLS. This new chapter for Sporting Kansas City aims to foster club success and resonate pride within the community and its supporters.
Lee’s illustrious career roots back to England before making his mark with the New York Red Bulls in 2011, where he served as a Performance Analyst contributing to their 2013 Supporters’ Shield win. He holds a master’s degree in performance analysis of sport from the University of Wales in Cardiff, aligning with Sporting Kansas City’s intention to integrate technology into its operations.
Expressing enthusiasm for his new role, Lee acknowledged Sporting Kansas City’s history, passionate fan base, and established winning ethos. He aims to build upon this strong foundation, working collaboratively with players, coaches, and staff to achieve collective goals. Looking ahead, Lee faces crucial decisions regarding the team’s 17 players this offseason, along with determining the futures of Sporting Director Mike Burns and coaching hires for both primary and secondary teams.
David Lee’s appointment signifies a promising shift for Sporting Kansas City, instilling hope for a prosperous and ambitious future, reinforcing its commitment to excellence in Major League Soccer.
