Sponsorship Sought as Fiji’s Suva Touch Rugby Gears Up for Pacific Cup

The Suva men’s touch rugby team is eagerly preparing for the Pacific Cup in New Zealand, yet financial constraints pose a significant challenge. Under the guidance of Coach Charles Cleary, the team has been dedicated to rigorous training, but the costs associated with travel, accommodation, and transport remain a concern. Many players are either unemployed or students, making external financial support essential to realize their international aspirations.

“Touch rugby is a developing sport in Fiji, and funding is a constant hurdle,” Cleary explained. He expressed gratitude to Suva Touch and the Fiji Touch Federation for their support but emphasized the urgent need for corporate sponsors to step in and assist the team. The Suva men’s team is part of a larger Fijian group, including women’s and mixed teams, heading to the Pacific Cup.

The squad’s depth combines seasoned players, some of whom competed in the Touch World Cup in England last year, with emerging talents demonstrating promise in the local scene. Cleary noted the expanding reach of touch rugby in Fiji, with increasing affiliations and development programs facilitated by the Fiji Sports Commission in areas such as Nadi, Lautoka, Savusavu, and soon, Sigatoka.

While the sport is gaining traction locally with greater community involvement, the immediate priority is securing the necessary funds for the New Zealand trip. Cleary remains hopeful that potential sponsors will appreciate the growth of touch rugby and see the value in supporting aspiring athletes seeking international exposure. The upcoming Pacific Cup, scheduled for November 1st and 2nd, presents a significant opportunity for these players to showcase their talents on an international stage, further elevating the sport in Fiji.

The Suva Touch Rugby Association has already made strides by securing participation in the Pacific Cup, highlighting the increasing recognition of touch rugby in Fiji and its commitment to nurturing local talent for greater international engagement. As financial support is sought, the onus is on fostering a stronger connection between corporate entities and the burgeoning sport, facilitating avenues for young athletes to excel and representing the spirit of touch rugby.
