Spirit Awards Nominations Hint at a Surprising Oscar Season

The nominations for the 2026 Film Independent Spirit Awards have been unveiled, setting the stage for an exciting awards season ahead of the Oscars. Leading the film categories is Ira Sachs’ “Peter Hujar’s Day,” which garnered five nominations, including acting recognitions for Rebecca Hall and Ben Whishaw. Additionally, Keke Palmer and SZA received nods for their performances in the comedy “One of Them Days,” which is also nominated for Best First Feature.

In the television categories, “Adolescence,” “Forever,” and “Mr. Loverman” emerged as the frontrunners, each securing four nominations. Among the standout performances recognized are Noah Wyle, Seth Rogen, and Ethan Hawke. “Chief of War,” featuring Jason Momoa, took home the award for Best Ensemble Cast in a New Scripted Series, while “The Long Walk” team was honored with the Robert Altman Award.

Despite some high-profile Oscar contenders being absent due to the Indie Spirits’ $30 million budget limit, several prominent awards hopefuls, including actors Rose Byrne and Joel Edgerton, received nominations. The Film Independent Spirit Awards have a history of aligning with the Oscars, having seen three of the past five Best Feature winners also take home the Academy’s Best Picture prize.

The nominations announcement comes a day after the New York Film Critics Circle awarded “One Battle After Another” the title of Best Film of 2025. The winners of the 41st Film Independent Spirit Awards will be revealed on February 15, 2026. This year’s nominations promise to highlight a diverse array of talent and stories, reflecting the vibrant independent film community.
