Spirit Airlines, the low-cost carrier, has announced that it will cease operations at the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport beginning January 8, 2026. This decision, confirmed by airport director Andy Moore on November 7, comes in the wake of the airline’s recent Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, marking its second bankruptcy in less than a year, with the first occurring in March.
Spirit Airlines will also discontinue service to several other airports, including Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Phoenix, Arizona; and St. Louis, Missouri, as part of its strategy to focus on more profitable markets amid its restructuring efforts. The airline’s adjustment to its 2026 schedule was described as a necessary step to better align its operations with a smaller fleet.
Moore expressed disappointment over the airline’s decision, emphasizing the airport’s appreciation for Spirit’s contributions since it began operations in Rochester in 2022. He conveyed goodwill towards the airline as it navigates its financial challenges.
In its official statement, Spirit Airlines acknowledged the difficult choice to end service to these locations, reaffirming its commitment to assist affected customers by providing options for refunds and updated travel plans. The airline also extended gratitude to the communities that have supported it throughout its operations.
While the end of Spirit’s service in Rochester may be disappointing for travelers, it highlights the broader recalibrations industries must undertake during challenging economic times.
