Spieth’s Grand Slam Dreams on Hold: A PGA Championship Surprise

Jordan Spieth’s pursuit of completing the career grand slam has been postponed for at least another year. The golfer did not make the cut at the PGA Championship this year, with the field narrowing from 156 to the top 70 players and ties. The cut line was set at +1, leaving Spieth at +2, among other notable names who also fell short.

Noteworthy players who failed to advance include Shane Lowry (+2), Ludvig Åberg (+3), Hideki Matsuyama (+3), Justin Thomas (+3), and Rickie Fowler (+4). Defending champion Xander Schauffele managed to make the cut at exactly +1, extending his impressive streak of 64 consecutive made cuts on the PGA Tour.

This tournament marks a significant moment as Matsuyama’s missed cut will end his remarkable streak of 19 straight made cuts in major tournaments. The PGA Championship has a storied history with cut lines, including the lowest at 140 strokes, or even par, in 2018, which was won by Brooks Koepka. Conversely, the record for the highest cut line was set in 1958 at +14.

An interesting tidbit from PGA Championship history reveals that only three major championships have had a cut line under par, all at -1. These instances occurred in 1990, 2006, and the most recent in 2024 at Valhalla.

Despite Spieth’s early exit, the competition continues to bring captivating moments with a number of seasoned players vying for the coveted title, and there is always potential for a comeback in the future.
