Americans nationwide are preparing for the Fourth of July, a day steeped in tradition that includes fireworks, parades, and outdoor barbecues. This federal holiday, also known as Independence Day, commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, when the original 13 colonies officially broke away from Great Britain.

Historically, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence on this day, although the vote to pursue independence occurred two days earlier. The movement for independence gained traction following the Revolutionary War’s outbreak, with delegates from various colonies, including Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, shaping the formal statement that defined the colonies’ separation from British rule. This pivotal event eventually transformed July 4 into the iconic celebration of America’s birth.

Fireworks have been part of Independence Day festivities since the first anniversary of the Declaration. On July 4, 1777, the Sons of Liberty ignited fireworks over Boston Common, marking the occasion. The tradition has only grown since then, with fireworks today symbolizing the celebration of freedom and unity.

Although July 4 celebrations began in 1777, it wasn’t until 1870 that the day was recognized as a federal holiday, and it became a paid federal holiday by 1941. The observance of Independence Day festivities grew notably following the War of 1812, establishing it as a significant secular holiday.

For those looking to celebrate this year, a variety of events are planned in the Oshkosh area. The annual parade kicks off at 9 a.m. downtown on North Main Street. Residents can also enjoy food trucks and the Festival Foods Fireworks Show at Menominee Park. In Omro, activities will include a craft fair, games, and live music, culminating in a parade and fireworks display. Nearby, Neenah and Menasha will host CommunityFest, featuring entertainment from petting zoos to magic shows, and fireworks slated for the evening. Winneconne will offer daytime and evening fireworks shows over the picturesque Wolf River.

Celebrating Independence Day brings communities together, fostering a spirit of patriotism, joy, and unity. This year’s events offer a chance to reflect on the nation’s history while enjoying the company of friends and loved ones.
