Spain stay flawless in World Cup qualifiers with 2-0 win over Georgia

European champions Spain continued their flawless World Cup qualifying campaign with a decisive 2-0 victory over Georgia in Elche. The match at the Estadio Martinez Valero showcased Luis de la Fuente’s squad navigating the absence of several regular players, ultimately delivering a commanding performance.

Yeremy Pino netted the opener in the 24th minute, demonstrating his scoring prowess. Although Ferran Torres had a penalty attempt thwarted by Georgia’s goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili shortly before halftime, Mikel Oyarzabal secured Spain’s second goal with a stunning free-kick in the second half, cementing their position at the top of Group E.

Spain initially sought a penalty after Torres was brought down by Giorgi Kochorashvili, but Lithuanian referee Manfredas Lukjancukas chose not to award the spot kick following a pitchside review. Despite this setback, Spain quickly shifted focus and pressed forward. Pino struck first after a corner was only partially cleared, setting up a well-executed shot from close range.

The match could have seen Spain extending their lead much earlier when Torres was fouled inside the box, leading to his saved penalty—a moment that would turn out to involve a notable achievement for the player, marking his 50th international cap. Mamardashvili’s heroics didn’t end there; he also denied a powerful drive from Pedro Porro and thwarted other attempts as Spain dominated possession and chances.

As the second half commenced, Spain maintained their offensive pressure, with opportunities coming thick and fast. Porro rattled the post with a curling attempt, and Oyarzabal saw his follow-up shot deflected off the woodwork once more.

The Spanish side finally found their second goal in the 64th minute when Oyarzabal connected with a well-placed free kick just outside the box, delivering a left-footed strike that soared into the top corner. Looking ahead, Spain’s next challenge will be against Bulgaria in Valladolid on Tuesday, as they aim to keep their winning streak alive.

With this win, Spain remains a dominant force in the qualifiers, showing resilience and talent even while missing key players. Their momentum continues, setting a hopeful tone as they pursue their goal of securing a spot in the upcoming World Cup.
