Firefighters are actively engaged in combating several significant wildfires that continue to threaten communities in Southern California. A red flag warning that commenced on Saturday evening at 6 p.m. has now been extended through Wednesday night, accompanied by an additional fire watch warning, indicating a high risk of rapid fire spread.
One of the most concerning blazes is the Palisades fire, which has consumed approximately 23,707 acres, impacting numerous homes, businesses, and iconic landmarks throughout Pacific Palisades and extending west along the Pacific Coast Highway toward Malibu. As of Sunday morning, the fire is only 11% contained, and evacuation orders are currently in place for many areas including Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Santa Monica, Calabasas, Brentwood, and Encino. Officials report that over 12,000 structures remain at risk, with estimates indicating that more than 5,300 homes and buildings have suffered damage or destruction.
Another significant fire, the Eaton fire, has burned around 14,117 acres and has affected structures in Altadena and Pasadena. As the fire approached Mt. Wilson, additional mandatory evacuations were implemented; however, officials have since lifted those orders for certain areas, allowing residents of Glenoaks Canyon and Chevy Chase Canyon to return home. Currently, the Eaton fire is 27% contained, a notable improvement from just 3% a few days prior. Damage assessments indicate that over 7,000 structures have been affected.
The Kenneth fire, though smaller at 1,052 acres, has been fully contained, and all evacuation warnings have been lifted as of Sunday morning. Similarly, the Hurst fire has burned 779 acres near Sylmar and is 76% contained, with evacuation orders also lifted for that area.
