Cooler temperatures coupled with patchy drizzle are anticipated across Southern California this weekend. However, meteorologists predict that a significant heat wave will sweep through the region next week, with temperatures soaring into the triple digits in certain inland areas.

According to the National Weather Service, a persistent marine layer and cool conditions are expected to dominate through Saturday, resulting in daytime highs in the 60s and the possibility of light drizzle.

Starting Sunday, a high-pressure ridge is expected to develop over Southern California, which will initiate a warming trend. Forecasters have indicated that next week could be particularly hot, lasting at least two days longer than the previous heat wave.

On Sunday, temperatures will return to the 70s, although a shallow marine layer could bring dense fog to coastal Los Angeles County on Monday morning before clearing rapidly. By Monday afternoon, temperatures are expected to rise another 5 to 10 degrees, with the western San Fernando Valley approaching 90 degrees—up to 15 degrees warmer than the previous day.

As the week progresses, Tuesday is projected to reflect conditions similar to the recent September-October heat waves. The warmest valleys may experience highs in the low 100s, while downtown Los Angeles could see low 90s and other areas away from the coast falling into the 80s.

Due to these rising temperatures, the National Weather Service may issue heat advisories for coastal valleys and some parts of the inner coastal plain. Thankfully, by Thursday, onshore flow is anticipated to return, which should promote a gradual cooling trend leading into next weekend.

The emphasis on the upcoming heat wave highlights the importance of staying hydrated and taking precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses, especially in vulnerable populations.
