South Korea Demands Withdrawal of North Korean Troops from Russia Amid Ukraine Conflict Concerns

South Korea is urging Russia to withdraw North Korean troops currently in the country, citing concerns that these soldiers are being trained to participate in the conflict in Ukraine. In a discussion with Russian Ambassador Georgiy Zinoviev, South Korean Vice-Foreign Minister Kim Hong-kyun condemned the presence of approximately 1,500 North Korean troops, including special forces, already reported in Russia. He warned that Seoul would “respond with all measures available.”

The South Korean government has expressed its demand for the immediate withdrawal of these troops and summoned the Russian ambassador to communicate its stance. In response, Ambassador Zinoviev noted he would convey the concerns but emphasized that the cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang operates within international law.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that the collaboration between Russia and North Korea is not aimed at any third countries and should not be a source of concern. However, Pyongyang has not officially commented on the accusations regarding its soldiers.

South Korea has long alleged that North Korea is supplying arms to Russia for its military efforts in Ukraine, asserting that the current situation represents an escalation beyond mere military support. Some reports suggest that as many as 12,000 North Korean troops may be deployed.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol discussed the situation with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and urged the alliance to consider “concrete countermeasures” while also seeking to enhance security cooperation with Ukraine and NATO.

British Foreign Minister David Lammy, visiting Seoul, described Russia’s actions as “reckless and illegal,” vowing cooperation with South Korea to address the situation. The United States and Japan have also criticized the growing military connection between North Korea and Russia.

In a response to inquiries about the situation, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson expressed hope for a de-escalation and a political resolution regarding the Ukraine crisis.

Experts have indicated that North Korea’s involvement could add complexity to the conflict, with potential for increased international engagement. However, there are concerns that North Korean troops may face challenges integrating into Russian military operations due to language barriers and a lack of recent combat experience. Some analysts suggest that these troops could be assigned to guard specific areas rather than be directly involved in frontline combat.
