South Carolina has been identified as the most earthquake-prone state on the East Coast, registering an average of 10 to 15 earthquakes each year. A recent event, a 3.0 magnitude earthquake that occurred near Columbia on February 26, has become the strongest recorded in the state for 2026 thus far. This earthquake took place at 12:17 p.m. near the eastern side of Lake Murray, with residents reporting a loud, booming noise and noticeable shaking. Fortunately, there was no significant damage reported in the affected areas surrounding Irmo, Lexington, and Columbia.
Alongside this recent tremor, South Carolina has experienced several other smaller earthquakes in quick succession, marking a higher-than-average frequency of seismic activity. So far in 2026, the state has recorded at least 12 earthquakes. The recent uptick in seismic events can be attributed to active “swarms” occurring along ancient fault lines, with the Middleton Place-Summerville Seismic Zone being the most active region. Experts from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) note that these quakes, despite their frequency, are typically minor and short-lived, not signalling the onset of a more significant seismic event.
Historically, South Carolina has a notable earthquake history, with the most significant event recorded being the 1886 Charleston earthquake which had a magnitude of 7.3 and resulted in extensive damage and fatalities. Another significant earthquake, the 1913 Union County quake with an estimated magnitude of 4.3, was also felt over a wide area.

The SCDNR advises residents to secure heavy furniture and prepare emergency kits while emphasizing the importance of the “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” protocol during tremors.
