Soundgarden Hall of Fame Induction Fueled by Love, Not Legacy

Eight years after the tragic passing of Chris Cornell, his enduring influence continues to resonate in every performance by Soundgarden. As the band prepares for their much-anticipated induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on Saturday, November 8, guitarist Kim Thayil emphasizes that the occasion is more about love than legacy.

“I will be attempting to play guitar again. And I think we all know that the spirit of this is the love we have for each other and the love that we all shared for Chris,” Thayil shared in a recent interview. He articulated that their performance would honor both their legacy and Cornell’s profound impact on their music and lives.

Thayil also expressed gratitude in being recognized alongside other rock legends. “The fact that we’re being recognized by an institution that also acknowledges Pearl Jam and Nirvana and the Stooges, I think that’s a big deal,” he reflected. He echoed the hope that other influential bands such as Sonic Youth, the Pixies, Motörhead, Iron Maiden, and Alice in Chains would receive recognition as well. This sentiment showcases a larger community spirit among musicians that celebrates their collective contributions.

Despite previously feeling that the Hall of Fame lacked relevance to Soundgarden’s ethos, Thayil noted that Cornell’s induction of Heart in 2013 changed that perspective. “Chris said that insight is what made him realize that this is a valuable institution. It matters to the fans,” he recalled. This newfound appreciation influences how Soundgarden approaches their induction—not as a comeback, but as a heartfelt celebration of music and friendship.

Chris Cornell’s unexpected death on May 18, 2017, at the age of 52, left a void in the music world. However, his legacy lives on through the passion and the love shared among his bandmates, who carry his spirit forward. For anyone grappling with similar struggles, support is available through the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988, which operates 24 hours a day.

This celebration of Soundgarden signifies an enduring bond among musicians and fans alike, reminding all of the healing power of music and the importance of community.
