Oklahoma’s softball team faced a setback in the Women’s College World Series as they fell to Texas 4-2 in a winners bracket meeting on May 31. Despite the loss, the Sooners have had an impressive postseason record of 6-1 and have been formidable opponents for Texas, holding a 6-1 record against them in the Women’s College World Series.
The Sooners demonstrated strong defensive skills, turning two double plays during the game, bringing their total to five in the World Series and 28 for the season. Senior pitcher Nicole Landry completed her 18th game of the season, allowing only three earned runs while striking out two batters. However, the offense struggled to capitalize on opportunities, leaving nine runners on base, which tied for the fourth most in a game for the season.
Oklahoma managed to respond quickly by scoring two runs in the second inning after falling behind 2-0 in the first. Yet, Texas regained the lead with two solo home runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The Sooners will look to bounce back against No. 16 Oregon in an elimination game scheduled for June 1, aiming to keep their hopes alive in the tournament.
Coach Patty Gasso acknowledged the challenge presented by Texas’s pitcher, Teagan Kavan, who effectively mixed up her pitches and kept the Sooners off-balance throughout the game. The Sooners have been strong against ranked teams with a record of 23-7, and their previous performances indicate that they possess the resilience and ability to turn things around.
With the stakes high, Oklahoma will bring their competitive spirit to the field in the upcoming challenge against Oregon, where a win could pave the way for a deep run in the championship. Fans remain hopeful as the Sooners, who have been dominant in their recent history against Texas and resilient in high-pressure situations, look to recover and advance in the tournament.
