Jim Carrey takes on a dual role in the upcoming “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” reprising his part as the eccentric Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik, while also portraying the character’s long-lost father. The film promises to bring even more bizarre twists to the beloved franchise.
In this installment, Robotnik finds himself teaming up with Sonic and his friends to battle a formidable new enemy, Shadow the Hedgehog, voiced by Keanu Reeves. This marks a notable shift for Eggman, who must undergo a dramatic transformation, including shaving his head and shedding his signature suit.
The storyline features an alliance between Sonic, voiced by Ben Schwartz, Knuckles (Idris Elba), Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), and Robotnik, as they take on Shadow, “a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before.” Faced with overwhelming odds, Team Sonic is expected to seek out unexpected partnerships to save their world.
Directed by Jeff Fowler, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” also includes performances from James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, Adam Pally, and Lee Majdoub, alongside newcomers Alyla Browne and Krysten Ritter. This film will also introduce Keanu Reeves in his debut as Shadow.
The film is a collaboration among several production companies, including Paramount, Sega Sammy Group, and Blur Studio. Producers involved include Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, Toru Nakahara, and Hitoshi Okuno. The story is crafted by Pat Casey and Josh Miller, who co-authored the screenplay with John Whittington.
The “Sonic the Hedgehog” series is based on the iconic Sega Genesis video games. Previous films have received mixed reviews, with some critics expressing disappointment in their execution. “Sonic 2,” for instance, was described as “lifeless” with a lack of charm by IndieWire’s Siddhant Adlakha.
“Sonic the Hedgehog 3” is set to hit theaters on December 20, and a trailer is already available for viewers.
