A Milwaukee couple’s musical journey is capturing hearts on the big screen in the film “Song Sung Blue,” which premiered on Christmas Day. The movie stars Hugh Jackman as Mike Sardina, known as “Lightning,” and Kate Hudson as Claire Sardina, affectionately called “Thunder.” The couple, who formed a beloved tribute act dedicated to Neil Diamond and other music legends, left an indelible mark on the local music scene from 1989 to 2006.

Lightning & Thunder were a staple at various venues, including the Wisconsin State Fair, where they famously tied the knot in 1994, and Summerfest, where they shared the stage with Pearl Jam in 1995. Their version of Neil Diamond’s “Forever in Blue Jeans,” featuring Eddie Vedder, cemented their status as local favorites. In May 2025, the Wisconsin Area Music Industry honored the duo with its inaugural WAMI Lifetime Achievement Award, a testament to their influence and legacy in the region.

The film “Song Sung Blue” delves into the Sardinas’ personal challenges. Mike, a Vietnam War veteran, battled alcohol and drug addiction but was sober when he met Claire in 1987. Tragically, their story took a difficult turn when Claire was involved in a car accident in 1999, which resulted in the amputation of her left leg. Despite these hardships, the couple persevered and returned to performing, but their duo’s story was cut short when Mike passed away in 2006 due to coronary complications.

Claire Sardina continues to honor their legacy through her music. She divides her time between Wisconsin and Arizona and remains active in the music scene. Recently, she performed alongside Jackman and Hudson at the premieres of “Song Sung Blue,” demonstrating her enduring connection to the music world.

The film is not only inspired by the Sardinas’ lives but also draws from Greg Kohs’ documentary “Song Sung Blue,” which premiered in 2008. Kohs, a Neil Diamond enthusiast, documented the couple’s journey, motivating filmmaker Craig Brewer to create the biopic after viewing the documentary at a festival in Memphis. Brewer expressed that Kohs’ dedication to the couple was pivotal in bringing their story to a wider audience.

Other notable real-life Milwaukee figures enrich the narrative. Tom D’Amato and Mike’s dentist, portrayed by Jim Belushi and Fisher Stevens, add depth to the storytelling, while the Sardinas’ children are represented by rising young talents. The film also includes appearances from local musical greats, showcasing the vibrant community that surrounded Lightning & Thunder throughout their careers.

This heartfelt story of resilience, love, and creativity serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of music and connection, resonating with audiences new and old.
