James Solomon has been projected to become the next mayor of Jersey City, according to the Associated Press. Currently serving as a councilman for downtown Jersey City since 2017, Solomon has campaigned on a platform focused on affordable housing, enhanced public education, and anti-corruption measures.
Born in Millburn, Solomon holds a master’s degree from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. He made the move to Jersey City in 2013 and has been a resilient figure, overcoming a Hodgkin’s Lymphoma diagnosis in 2015, from which he is now in full remission.
Throughout his tenure on the City Council, Solomon has aimed to tackle pressing issues facing the city. His plans include creating grants and fellowships supporting local journalism, increasing the police force by 100 officers, and establishing a dedicated mental health crisis response team. He is particularly keen on addressing rising living costs, pledging to halt double-digit rent increases, and ensuring tenants have access to legal representation.
Solomon has made clear his commitment to addressing the influence of developers and special interests in Jersey City, emphasizing the need for effective public safety measures and collaboration with the independent board of education to enhance the quality of schools. He plans to build upon his legislative achievements as a council member, which include initiatives aimed at curbing excessive rent hikes.
Additionally, former governor Jim McGreevey highlighted the city’s significant financial challenges, including a projected $150 million budget shortfall that could lead to a potential 30% increase in property taxes if left unaddressed. Solomon expressed his dedication to securing fiscal responsibility to ensure that working families in Jersey City are not forced out of their homes due to rising costs.
As Solomon prepares to take office, there is hope for positive change in Jersey City, particularly for those concerned about housing affordability and quality education. His proactive approach could signal a new era of governance aimed at fostering inclusivity and stability in the community.
