Small Island, Big Reform: Solomon Islands Eyes UN Security Council Seat

Solomon Islands pushes UN reform for a veto-free Security Council

The Solomon Islands Prime Minister, Jeremiah Manele, has made a compelling call for reform at the United Nations, which includes the nation’s inaugural campaign for a non-permanent seat on the Security Council for the 2032-2033 term. Speaking at the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, Manele underscored the necessity for the UN to adapt to contemporary geopolitical landscapes by proposing a transformation to make the Security Council more democratic and inclusive.

Manele stressed the challenges posed by the current structure, where veto power within the Council often obstructs international peace efforts and ignores vulnerable populations. He advocated for the veto’s removal, believing it crucial for the Council to effectively promote global peace and security. Signaling the Solomon Islands’ dedication to these principles, Manele confirmed the country’s active participation in UN peacekeeping endeavors.

Additionally, Manele raised concerns about the UN’s presence in Pacific regions, citing underrepresentation in staffing and advocating for improved recruitment practices. He also reaffirmed the Solomon Islands’ commitment to the abolition of nuclear weapons, reflecting on the painful legacy of nuclear activities and World War II remnants in the Pacific.

On the matter of Gaza, Manele called for an immediate ceasefire and greater accountability, supporting a two-state solution and thus emphasizing the Solomon Islands’ commitment to peace and stability in accordance with international law.

He concluded by calling for the recognition of smaller states in multilateral decision-making, advocating for a stronger, unified global system. Commemorating the UN’s 80th anniversary, Manele expressed optimism for a future underpinned by sustainable development and human rights, appealing to the current generation to establish a legacy of bravery and cooperation.

Emphasizing regional unity with themes such as “Iumi Tugeda” (Together), Manele aims to leverage the Solomon Islands’ diplomatic initiatives to foster broader regional cooperation and global stability. He highlights the nation’s desire to make a significant contribution to the international community, focusing on collective action as essential for achieving a more representative system of global governance.
