Solomon Islands Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele has announced the appointment of two recently dismissed ministers to cabinet sub-committees during a press conference on Tuesday. The ministers, John Tuhaika Jnr, the former Minister for Traditional Governance, Peace and Ecclesiastical Affairs, and Polycarp Paea, who previously held the Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology portfolio, will continue to play crucial roles in policy-making despite their removal from their ministerial positions.

This cabinet reshuffle aims to embody coalition commitments and facilitate the successful execution of the government’s budget, particularly in light of the upcoming 2026 program. Manele has also reinstated former Provincial Government Minister Rollen Seleso, who previously withdrew his support amid a significant ministerial walkout last year. This strategic alignment is intended to foster equitable representation within the coalition government.

Prime Minister Manele assured the stability of his administration following these changes, indicating that there would be no further ministerial alterations for the time being. The reshuffle included the swearing-in of three ministers: Seleso, who resumes his Provincial Government duties, Wayne Ghemu, who has been appointed to the Environment Ministry, and Stephen Kumi, the MP for Temotu Nende, who has been named the new Minister for Traditional Governance.

In his remarks, Manele emphasized the importance of thorough consultations with coalition partners and fellow Members of Parliament. These adjustments will ensure cabinet roles accurately reflect the Government for National Unity and Transformation (GNUT) and enhance coordination for the effective implementation of the 2026 program.

“As we prepare for the full implementation of the 2026 Budget, aligning ministerial portfolios strategically is pivotal for fostering collaboration and providing clear leadership across vital sectors,” Manele stated. He acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing ministers and expressed gratitude for their service, underscoring a commitment to ongoing improvement and effective governance in the Solomon Islands.
