Solomon Islands Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele announced that two ministers who were recently removed from their positions will be given roles on cabinet sub-committees. During a press conference on Tuesday, Manele addressed the dismissals of Rennell and Bellona MP John Tuhaika Jnr, formerly the Minister for Traditional Governance, Peace and Ecclesiastical Affairs, and Malaita Outer Islands MP Polycarp Paea, who managed the Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology portfolio.
This cabinet realignment is part of a broader strategy to reflect coalition commitments and ensure the effective implementation of the government’s budget. Manele reinstated former Provincial Government Minister Rollen Seleso, who had previously retracted support from the Prime Minister during a significant ministerial walkout last year. This reshuffle is intended to enhance fair and balanced representation within the coalition government.
Manele reiterated the stability of his government following the changes and assured that both Tuhaika and Paea will continue to play significant roles in policy-making, as they will be appointed to lead various cabinet sub-committees. He emphasized that there will be no further ministerial changes for the time being.
The reshuffle saw the swearing-in of three ministers, including Seleso, who took back his Provincial Government responsibilities from Wayne Ghemu, now appointed to the Environment Ministry. Stephen Kumi, the MP for Temotu Nende, was also sworn in as the new Minister for Traditional Governance.
Prime Minister Manele outlined that these adjustments followed thorough discussions with coalition partners and other Members of Parliament. This is to ensure that Cabinet roles reflect the composition of the Government for National Unity and Transformation (GNUT), while also enhancing coordination for the effective execution of the 2026 programme.
“As we prepare for the full implementation of the 2026 Budget, it is crucial that ministerial portfolios are strategically aligned to foster collaboration and provide clear leadership across essential sectors,” Manele stated. He praised the outgoing ministers for their contributions and expressed gratitude for their service, reflecting a commitment to continuous improvement and effective governance in the Solomon Islands.
