The Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) is intensifying its preparations for the upcoming general elections, focusing on increasing participation from both youth and women. General Secretary Simione Rasova shared that a priority for the party is to bolster its internal structures ahead of the Annual General Meeting (AGM) set for November 8. This gathering aims to ensure adherence to the party’s constitution and to establish dedicated committees for youth and women that will influence the campaign strategy.
Rasova emphasized the introduction of a new candidate application portal on SODELPA’s website, designed to allow individuals to confidentially express their interest in joining the party. This move is intended to foster a more inclusive approach to political engagement. In light of the recent deregistration of FijiFirst, SODELPA is optimistic about captivating a significant share of the electorate, with hopes to attract at least half of the over 200,000 voters previously associated with the dissolved party.
Reflecting on past coalition efforts, Rasova acknowledged the strong alliance between SODELPA, the People’s Alliance, and the National Federation Party, noting, however, that only about fifty percent of shared commitments have been achieved to date. Despite some challenges, he commended the party’s ministers for their success in delivering over 70 percent of the promises made in their 2022 manifesto, particularly in crucial ministries like Education and iTaukei Affairs.
The leadership of Party Leader and Education Minister Aseri Radrodro is seen as a vital component of SODELPA’s strategy, with confidence in his capability to lead Fiji as the next Prime Minister. The party’s emphasis on expanding youth and women’s representation in leadership illustrates SODELPA’s commitment to a progressive political agenda, aligning with the electorate’s desire for change.
As SODELPA navigates the shifting political landscape in Fiji, its proactive initiatives, including an effective grassroots engagement strategy and a focus on inclusivity, project a positive outlook for the party’s impact on governance in the country. These efforts reflect an optimistic vision for a revitalized political future, encouraging diverse perspectives to contribute meaningfully to Fiji’s democratic process.
