In Vermont, over 160,000 residents benefit from Social Security, according to data from December 2023. During May, many recipients were set to receive two checks. This arrangement, however, affects the distribution schedule for SSI benefits, resulting in no checks for certain individuals in June.
Approximately 69 million Americans, including retirees and individuals with disabilities, will receive Social Security payments in May. Among these, about 7.4 million Americans benefit from Supplemental Security Income (SSI), with many of those individuals also qualifying for additional Social Security benefits.
The Social Security Administration has outlined the distribution schedule for May 2025:
– Friday, May 2: Recipients who began receiving Social Security benefits before May 1997
– Wednesday, May 14: Birthdates from the 1st to the 10th
– Wednesday, May 21: Birthdates from the 11th to the 20th
– Wednesday, May 28: Birthdates from the 21st to the 31st
SSI recipients have a unique payment schedule this month, receiving two checks: one on May 1 for the month of May and another on May 30 for June, due to the first of June falling on a weekend.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) provides essential monthly benefits to those aged 65 or older, as well as to blind individuals and those with qualifying disabilities. These payments also extend to eligible children. To qualify for SSI, adults typically must not have monthly wages exceeding $2,019.
For those who didn’t receive their payment when expected, the Social Security Administration recommends waiting three additional mailing days before contacting them, as 99% of payments are made electronically on time.
Vermont residents needing assistance can visit one of the three Social Security offices located in Burlington, Montpelier, and Rutland. The Social Security Administration also provides options for initiating SSI applications online, in-person, or via phone.
While the scheduled changes may be a source of concern for some, they also present an opportunity for recipients to better plan their financial needs. With clear guidelines and resources available, beneficiaries can navigate these payments with confidence.
It’s promising to see that the Social Security Administration continues to provide structured assistance to millions of individuals, underscoring the importance of social safety nets in supporting those in need.
