Social Media Threats Spark Safety Alarm Among Miami-Dade Schools

A suspect was apprehended following a threatening post on an Instagram account late Thursday night, causing alarm among parents and students at a Southwest Miami-Dade middle school, as reported by an officer on the scene Friday morning.

Additionally, a local high school also received a threat.

The initial threat appeared to be aimed at Lamar Louise Curry Middle School, featuring an image that resembled a firearm, accompanied by text stating: “Don’t go to school tmr llcms.” One parent expressed her decision not to send her child to school that day.

“As a parent, we have to make a decision whether we risk sending our children to school amidst a threat or accept an absence. I’d rather manage a school absence than risk losing my child, because their life is irreplaceable,” she stated.

A recorded message from the school’s principal notified the community about the threat, confirming that the school had promptly informed the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department. The message emphasized that authorities are investigating and implementing necessary security measures.

It also highlighted the legal ramifications for making threats against schools, regardless of their severity.

Officials at Coconut Creek High School also reported receiving a threat, though they did not disclose additional details, and it remained unclear if it was related to the threat directed at Lamar Louise Curry. Classes were not canceled at either institution.

“Today’s children face so many challenges that we never had to contend with at their age. They worry more about their safety in school than their education,” the concerned mother remarked.

Miami-Dade Public Schools have not yet released specific information regarding the social media post.

These threats follow a tragic school shooting in Winder, Georgia, that resulted in the deaths of two students and two teachers. A 14-year-old and his father are facing charges in connection with that incident. During a 2023 interview regarding a menacing social media post, the teenager denied any intention to commit a school shooting, according to a sheriff’s report obtained on Thursday.

The recent shooting has heightened concerns among parents and students nationwide.

“We need to hope that politics are set aside to implement effective gun control measures and create safer school environments,” the South Florida mother who decided against sending her child to school said. “We must pray for their safety and that they return home to us every day.”

NBC6 is continuing to seek further information on the matter.
