Released at Disney’s D23 Expo, the trailer features Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, and it is set to premiere on March 21, 2025. Audiences were treated to glimpses of Zegler singing “Whistle While You Work” and Gadot interacting with her mirror, alongside the introduction of seven CGI dwarfs.
The film, written by Greta Gerwig and Erin Cressida Wilson and directed by Marc Webb, is said to incorporate several modern twists and includes new songs by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. However, the update to the beloved 1937 classic has invited skepticism from Disney fans and critics, who have already scrutinized the adaptation prior to the trailer’s release.
One main point of contention arises from the casting of Zegler, whose Latin descent has led to racial backlash online. Critics questioned her suitability for the role based on the character’s traditional portrayal. Zegler responded by emphasizing the importance of representation, stating that all children should see themselves as potential princesses, regardless of their background.
Additionally, Zegler and Gadot have discussed a more empowered version of Snow White, who will not be reliant on a prince for salvation but instead aspires to leadership. This portrayal has drawn criticism from some who view it as overly “woke” or misaligned with the original fairytale’s themes. There are concerns that Snow White’s character has shifted too far from her historical roots, with some critics suggesting this transformation diminishes the essence of the story.
Comments made by Dinklage also added to the controversies, as he called out the depiction of dwarfs in the story. In light of his criticism, Disney indicated it would take a different approach to avoid reinforcing stereotypes about dwarfism, signaling a shift in how the seven dwarfs will be represented in the film.
