The live-action adaptation of Snow White, directed by Marc Webb, had high expectations but faced numerous challenges that contributed to its disappointing performance. Originally envisioned as a groundbreaking remake, the film quickly garnered controversy. The casting of Rachel Zegler in the lead role raised eyebrows, particularly with the announcement that the beloved Seven Dwarfs would be replaced by a “politically correct” band of bandits. However, after facing backlash from fans, the decision was reversed, leading to extensive reshoots that reintroduced the dwarfs, albeit in a fully CGI format.

Compounding the difficulties, Zegler found herself in a media storm due to her outspoken views on various topics, including critiques of the original film and public figures like former President Donald Trump, as well as her stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. These opinions drew mixed reactions and calls for boycotts from both supporters and detractors.

Despite its rich production values and strong marketing efforts, Snow White grossed only $206 million worldwide against a budget exceeding $350 million, marking it as a critical and commercial misfire. In a recent interview with Glamour, Zegler addressed ongoing criticisms, stating that she remains unfazed by negative feedback. “Honestly, I’m a duck. It rolls right off my back these days,” she said, emphasizing the importance of embracing one’s own perspectives and the value of her experiences during the production.

She expressed gratitude for the friendships and lessons she gained while working on Snow White, noting that it had achieved number one status on Disney+ for a time, suggesting a positive reception in streaming despite its theatrical failures. “It was one of those experiences of sometimes negativity being louder than positivity,” Zegler remarked.

While the film’s theatrical journey was tumultuous, Zegler has successfully shifted her focus to new projects, such as her role in Evita on London’s West End. It appears that she, like many actors before her, is determined to move past the challenges of this adaptation and carve out a successful career despite the setbacks.

As the dust settles on Snow White, it prompts reflection on the balance between artistic expression and public scrutiny in the age of social media. Whether or not the backlash is justified can remain a topic for debate, but Zegler’s resilience in the face of adversity showcases her determination to thrive in the entertainment industry.
