Snoop Dogg has had a standout year in 2024, making headlines from his role in the Paris Summer Olympics to his appearance as a coach on Season 26 of The Voice. Now, he is drawing attention in the animated biopic Piece By Piece, focused on the artist Pharrell Williams, which is entirely crafted in LEGO.
Directed by Academy Award-winning Morgan Neville, the film features a humorously creative scene that depicts the pivotal moment when Snoop and his entourage arrived at Pharrell’s studio to collaborate on music. In an interview with NBC Insider, Neville discussed how this amusing sequence came to life.
In 2004, Snoop Dogg reached out to Pharrell and his co-producer Chad Hugo, known as the Neptunes, to expand his musical style. This collaboration led to the creation of the iconic song “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” characterized by its unique mouth click percussion loop.
The film’s depiction of that moment cleverly navigates the more adult themes associated with Snoop’s persona at the time. As the atmosphere in the studio becomes infused with “smoke,” LEGO versions of Pharrell and Chad control the scene with a humorous PG spray, ensuring the content remains family-friendly.
Neville highlighted the advantages of animation, explaining that it allowed them to transport viewers to the moment of creation. He acknowledged the challenge of addressing the smoke element while maintaining a PG rating. Ultimately, the inventive solution of the PG spray transformed into one of the film’s enjoyable jokes.
Piece By Piece is currently in theaters.
