Universal Pictures is moving forward with a biopic about music icon Snoop Dogg, directed by Craig Brewer, who is known for his work on “Coming 2 America” and “Hustle & Flow.” Jonathan Daviss, best recognized for his role as Pope Heyward on Netflix’s “Outer Banks,” has been cast as the lead, portraying Calvin Broadus Jr., better known as Snoop Dogg. Brewer is currently revising the script originally written by Joe Robert Cole, aiming to capture Snoop Dogg’s remarkable journey to fame.
The film will be produced by Snoop Dogg alongside Brian Grazer and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker. Notably, this marks the inaugural project under Death Row Pictures’ partnership with NBCUniversal Entertainment & Studios. Ryan Jones, senior vice president of production development at Universal, is overseeing the project.
Snoop Dogg is a celebrated artist with 17 Grammy nominations, and his landmark debut album “Doggystyle” released in 1993 has left an indelible mark on hip-hop, featuring iconic tracks like “What’s My Name?” and “Gin and Juice.”
The interest in biographical films about musicians continues to thrive in Hollywood, following successful releases such as Paramount’s “Bob Marley: One Love” and the critically acclaimed “A Complete Unknown,” centered on Bob Dylan and boasting eight Oscar nominations. Additionally, a four-film series about The Beatles is on the horizon, set to hit theaters in April 2028, and Bruce Springsteen’s biopic, “Deliver Me From Nowhere,” will premiere this fall.
Davis is represented by Monster Talent, Innovative Artists, and Skrzyniarz & Mallean.
The casting of Daviss as Snoop Dogg is an exciting development, particularly as the artist’s influence in music and culture continues to expand, suggesting that this film could resonate with audiences, both fans of Snoop Dogg and newcomers alike, adding a fresh narrative to his storied legacy.
