Snoop Dogg has teamed up with GLAAD to promote inclusivity through a new children’s single titled “Love Is Love,” which was announced on October 16. This collaboration comes in the wake of some controversy, as the rapper previously criticized a same-sex scene in Disney and Pixar’s animated film Lightyear that left his grandson with perplexing questions.
During a conversation shared on his YouTube channel, Snoop Dogg, along with Jeremy Beloate, an openly queer artist and a recent collaborator on his Death Row Records label, discussed the significance of this song. Snoop highlighted how important it is for children to understand love in all its forms, affirming that families can take various shapes and still provide nurturing environments. He stated, “It’s a beautiful thing that kids can have parents of all walks [of life], and be shown love.”
The rapper acknowledged the importance of teaching love while recognizing that “hate is taught,” indicating his commitment to using his platform to foster understanding and acceptance. “These kids are being loved by these great parents [who] are showing them an example of what family is,” Snoop remarked, giving praise to parents fostering environments of love and inclusion.
Snoop Dogg faced backlash after sharing his discomfort regarding a scene from Lightyear in which two women kiss and navigate parenthood. This scene prompted his grandson to question how women could have a baby together, leading Snoop to feel unprepared to answer such inquiries. Reflecting on this experience, he expressed his apprehension about engaging with movies that might provoke these challenging discussions, admitting, “I didn’t come here for this… I just came to watch the goddamn movie.”
In light of this, Snoop’s new partnership with GLAAD aims to educate children on the valuable lessons of love, acceptance, and diversity. Through “Love Is Love,” he intends to provide families with resources that encourage open conversations about various kinds of relationships and the love that unites them all. This initiative reflects his growth and willingness to address previously uncomfortable subjects, creating a more inclusive narrative for younger audiences. As Snoop continues to engage in this transformative dialogue, there is a hopeful outlook on the potential for greater understanding and acceptance among future generations.
