High winds hit Snohomish County on Monday, leading to significant power outages for residents who had just weathered prior storms. As the region braces for even stronger winds expected on Tuesday night, the National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning effective through Wednesday morning for the lowlands of northwest Snohomish County. Wind speeds are predicted to reach 25 to 40 mph, with gusts possibly soaring to between 50 and 55 mph.

The warning emphasizes the potential for damaging winds to topple trees and power lines, which could result in widespread power outages. Travel conditions are expected to be hazardous, particularly for high-profile vehicles due to the intensity of the winds. Initially, a wind advisory was issued, cautioning of gusts up to 45 mph.

In addition to wind warnings, a flood warning for the Skykomish River near Gold Bar has been extended until early Thursday morning. The river was recorded at 13 feet on Tuesday morning, anticipated to drop to 12.4 feet later that morning before rising again to 17.7 feet on Tuesday night, significantly above the flood stage. This marks a historical rise, as the river last reached a similar crest in December 1982.

Meteorologist Anna Lindeman noted that the unique wind pattern—typically coming from the south, now shifting to the northwest—could make trees more vulnerable to falling. Strong wind gusts are expected to increase throughout Tuesday afternoon, peaking during the evening commute and later in the night.

As of Monday afternoon, over 16,000 residents were without power, with the hardest hit areas including Darrington, Arlington, Granite Falls, and Everett, as reported by Snohomish Public Utility District (PUD). Spokesperson Aaron Swaney indicated that crews worked diligently to restore power but would prepare for further outages that night. He cautioned that areas like Camano Island and the western regions of Snohomish County could see the most severe impacts due to the wind’s direction.

In light of these forecasts, the utility district has advised residents to prepare for the possibility of extended outages. Suggestions include having extra food and water, charging electronics, and securing alternative light and heating sources. For further power outage updates and reporting, residents can visit the PUD’s outage map online.

As the storm continues, communities are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this challenging weather event.
