Two trains collided in Slovakia on Sunday evening, with one train hitting the rear of the other, resulting in multiple injuries among passengers, as reported by local police and the Interior Minister. The accident occurred in the railway corridor between Bratislava and Pezinok, about 20 kilometers northeast of the capital, leading to dozens of passengers suffering minor injuries. Of these, 11 individuals required hospital treatment, although fortunately, there were no fatalities.
Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok, who provided updates from the crash site during a televised press briefing, shared that initial investigations revealed there was no head-on collision or derailment involved in this incident. Witnesses described the moment of impact as a loud “bang,” highlighting the severity of the event.
This collision marks the second railway accident in Slovakia within a month, following a serious incident on October 13 that involved two trains in eastern Slovakia, resulting in 91 injuries. The recurrence of such accidents is likely to raise concerns regarding railway safety, prompting officials to reassess current safety protocols.
Despite these challenges, there remains optimism for future improvements in safety measures and emergency responses, aimed at preventing similar incidents. As investigations continue to determine the causes behind this latest crash, the emphasis now shifts towards enhancing passenger safety and restoring public confidence in Slovakia’s rail transport system.
