Skyryse has unveiled a new partnership with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) aimed at enhancing firefighting technology, operations, and training programs. This collaboration introduces SkyOS, a universal operating system designed to improve the effectiveness and safety of firefighting aircraft in California, particularly in its effort to bolster wildfire resilience and protect vulnerable communities.
SkyOS is engineered to elevate pilot success, especially during critical missions in challenging environments. The new features being developed for firefighting aircraft include:
– Fly-by-wire technology that enhances safety by replacing traditional mechanical flight controls.
– Optionally-piloted capabilities that allow aircraft to be deployed in dangerous areas without risking a pilot’s life.
– Increased payload capacity for longer flight durations, thereby maximizing firefighting effectiveness.
– A user-friendly interface that minimizes cognitive overload for pilots.
– Enhanced performance features that aid safe operations in poor visibility, setting a higher standard for aerial firefighting.
CAL FIRE operates the largest civil aerial firefighting fleet in the nation, with aircraft stationed at 14 air attack bases and 11 helitack bases throughout California. They are strategically located to respond to wildfires within a 20-minute timeframe and provide fire protection services over 31 million acres of private wildlands. Additionally, CAL FIRE firefighters handle a wide range of emergency services, responding to various incidents across 36 counties.
This partnership follows the severe wildfires in Southern California in January 2025 that resulted in significant devastation, including 30 fatalities and the destruction of over 18,000 structures.
