Cam Skattebo delivered an impressive performance for Arizona State on Saturday, scoring three touchdowns and showcasing his talent during the No. 13 Sun Devils’ commanding 45-19 victory over No. 16 Iowa State in the Big 12 Conference championship game. This victory not only secured the championship title but also positioned Arizona State favorably for a spot in the forthcoming 12-team College Football Playoff.
After his remarkable showing, Skattebo expressed his belief in his abilities as a top running back in college football. “Nobody respects the fact that I’m the best running back in the country,” he stated in the postgame press conference. “I am going to stand on that. If people want to disrespect that, I am going to keep going and I am going to keep proving people wrong.”
In the game, Skattebo recorded 16 carries for 170 rushing yards, along with two rushing touchdowns and a touchdown reception. Notably, he made runs of 53 and 47 yards in the first half alone, showcasing his explosive speed and relentless style. Had the game remained competitive, Skattebo could have challenged Darren Sproles’ Big 12 championship game rushing record of 235 yards.
This season, Skattebo has amassed a total of 1,538 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns over 263 carries, in addition to 506 receiving yards and three touchdowns from 37 receptions. While Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty is also in contention for the Heisman Trophy, with impressive stats of 2,497 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns, Skattebo feels confident in his abilities. “Whatever NFL team takes me is going to get a gem,” he asserted. “And I am going to give it everything I got for them. No matter winning the Heisman or losing the Heisman, I should be in that situation.”
As the postseason approaches, Skattebo’s standout performance and his fierce determination to gain recognition highlight the promise he holds, not just for his team, but for his future in professional football. With continued dedication, he could become a key player to watch in the upcoming NFL draft.
