The Philadelphia 76ers faced a challenging matchup against the Boston Celtics, ultimately succumbing to a 114-98 defeat at TD Garden. This loss means that the Sixers split their four-game season series against the Celtics, who currently sit as the second seed in the Eastern Conference with a record of 40-20, while the Sixers fall to 33-27.

Tyrese Maxey stood out for the Sixers, scoring 33 points and dishing out six assists, while VJ Edgecombe contributed with 23 points and five rebounds. On the other side, Celtics center Neemias Queta shone brightly with a career-high 27 points alongside 17 rebounds. Star forward Jaylen Brown also had an impressive game, tallying 27 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists.

Notably absent from the Sixers’ lineup was Joel Embiid, who is sidelined due to a right oblique strain. This injury will also keep him from playing in the upcoming back-to-back games against the San Antonio Spurs and the Utah Jazz.

The match began with the Sixers quickly establishing an 8-2 lead, propelled by a floater from Kelly Oubre Jr. along with three-pointers from Maxey and Edgecombe. However, the Celtics struck back hard, capitalizing on offensive rebounds to score critically during the initial quarter. Half of Boston’s 26 first-quarter points came from second-chance opportunities, highlighting the ongoing concern of the Sixers’ rebounding struggles, especially in the absence of Embiid.

Throughout the season under head coach Nick Nurse, the team’s offensive rebounding has excelled, ranking eighth, but defensive rebounding remains a glaring issue, sitting at 28th. This has raised concerns considering the potential impact on their playoff performance, as this dynamic has persisted despite adjustments in personnel and game strategy.

Despite the Sixers’ early struggles, Maxey continued to push through, albeit facing a challenging shooting performance in the first half, where he went 4 for 18. His determination was evident as he attempted to help the team stay competitive. Although he momentarily ignited a charge by narrowing the deficit, the Celtics managed to close out the half with a comfortable lead.

In an encouraging turn, the Sixers clawed their way back in the second half, with Maxey finding his rhythm and Edgecombe making impactful plays. Edgecombe’s performance, particularly against the Celtics, has been noteworthy, as he had previously posted strong numbers in earlier matchups this season.

Despite their efforts, the Sixers ultimately fell short, remaining competitive but unable to replicate their typical late-game heroics. Late-game execution issues combined with Boston’s timely offensive rebounds allowed the Celtics to maintain their advantage without much contest.

As the Sixers navigate injuries and close out the season, the focus will be on sharpening their rebounding efforts and improving their endgame strategies ahead of the playoffs. With Maxey and Edgecombe showing promise, fans may remain hopeful for a resurgence as they approach these critical matchups in the coming days.
