As part of the Philadelphia 76ers’ celebration of the 2001 NBA Finals team, the iconic former mascot Hip Hop will make a return. Bill Roth, who donned the rabbit costume from 1998 to 2011, has agreed to reprise his role for a special appearance, igniting nostalgia for fans of that era.
A few weeks ago, Roth had a surprise visit from the Sixers’ vice president Mike Goings and manager of live events Derrick Hayes while at his gym in Delaware County. Initially expecting a casual lunch to catch up, Roth was presented with the invitation to once again wear the Hip Hop costume as the team honors the memories of their 2001 season, which culminated in a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals.
Despite feeling a whirlwind of emotions, Roth accepted the offer, marking a significant moment in his life. His return is scheduled for the Sixers’ home game against the Toronto Raptors on November 8, where he will participate alongside the current team mascot, Franklin the Dog, in various tributes celebrating the 2000-01 team.
Roth reminisced about the time when he first took on the mascot role, noting the distinct black uniforms and the electrifying presence of Allen Iverson, the team’s star at the time. Roth’s portrayal of Hip Hop involved acrobatic feats, from trampoline jumps to mid-air somersaults while showcasing a unique style with sunglasses and a durag.
At 55, Roth is unsure if he can replicate the same high-energy moves but is excited about the rekindled spirit that this opportunity brings. He humorously acknowledged the concern from his wife, who might share the sentiment that he should be cautious.
The chance to reconnect with his family through these celebrations is especially meaningful. Roth’s children, who grew up watching him perform, are now older and will be present to witness their father’s revival of the beloved character. His son Matthew, a gymnast, and daughters Madison and Adrienne, who both participated in the act during their childhood, will be there to support him on this special night.
In preparation for his triumphant return, Roth has been revisiting old performances, studying videos of his past routines, and observing other mascots for inspiration. The prospect of reconnecting with the game day staff and fans evokes a wave of both excitement and nerves as he readies himself for the spotlight once more.
With this revival of Hip Hop, the Sixers not only celebrate their rich history but also bring together family, friends, and fans to relive cherished memories from a special chapter in the team’s legacy, fostering a sense of community that still thrives today.
