Six More Deaths in Listeria Outbreak Linked to Ready-to-Eat Pasta Recalls

A listeria outbreak linked to ready-to-eat pasta products has resulted in two additional deaths and multiple hospitalizations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that the outbreak is associated with recalled products from Nate’s Fine Foods Inc., notably the Cajun Style Blackened Chicken Breast Fettuccine Alfredo sold at Trader Joe’s, as well as various other ready-to-eat meal items available at major retailers including Kroger, Walmart, and Albertsons.

Since the outbreak began in August 2024, the CDC has documented 27 illnesses across 18 states. The latest public health alert, updated by the CDC and the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service, revealed that six additional hospitalizations have occurred, pushing the total count to 25. The total number of fatalities now stands at six, with reports from Hawaii and Oregon contributing to the grim statistics.

In its advisory, the CDC mentioned that the actual number of affected individuals is likely higher than reported, as some recover without seeking medical attention and remain undiagnosed. Health officials have urged consumers to check their refrigerators for recalled products and refrain from consuming any items that may be affected. They also recommended cleaning refrigerators, surfaces, and containers that may have come into contact with contaminated foods, as Listeria can persist and contaminate other items.

The FDA has also released a comprehensive list of the recalled products, which now includes additional items that may have been compromised. Among the latest recalls are the Sprouts Farmers Market Smoked Mozzarella Pasta Salad and Scott & Jon’s Shrimp Scampi with Linguini Bowls, alongside the previously noted Cajun Style Blackened Chicken Breast Fettuccine Alfredo.

Health experts caution that listeriosis can pose significant risks, particularly to pregnant individuals, newborns, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems, potentially leading to serious health complications, including pregnancy loss or premature birth.

The CDC estimates that approximately 1,250 people in the U.S. are infected with listeriosis each year, with around 172 deaths attributed to the illness. As more information is gathered, both the CDC and FDA continue to monitor the situation closely and encourage consumers to stay informed about the health implications associated with these food products.

This outbreak highlights the importance of food safety measures and timely recalls to protect public health. Consumers are advised to remain vigilant and follow the recommended precautions to avoid potential contamination.
