An explosion at a high-rise construction site in downtown Houston has resulted in injuries to six individuals, as confirmed by the Houston Fire Department (HFD). The incident occurred around 11:08 a.m. near the intersection of Texas Avenue and Austin Street.

HFD spokesperson Brent Taylor reported that the explosion originated from one of the upper floors of the building currently under construction. Multiple victims sustained burn injuries and were transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital for treatment. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported at this time.

The ongoing investigation into the cause of the explosion remains inconclusive. However, Taylor noted that it may be related to a boiler. Emergency crews have closed off several streets in the vicinity, affecting traffic patterns. Residents and commuters are advised to avoid Texas Avenue, Caroline, San Jacinto, and Austin Street, with suggested detours including Fannin and La Branch Streets.

HFD’s arson department has been assigned to investigate the origins of the explosion, and building department inspectors from Public Works will also assess the situation.

Eyewitness Terrance Bankston described the incident, saying it sounded like a bomb going off, underscoring the intensity of the explosion.

The situation continues to develop, and further updates will be provided as information becomes available. The swift response from emergency services highlights the community’s resilience in the face of unexpected incidents.
