Six Flags has announced the closure of its Great America theme park in Santa Clara, California, at the end of the 2027 season. This decision comes as the company reassesses its operations, with Chief Financial Officer Brian Witherow noting that both Great America and Six Flags America in Bowie, Maryland, ranked low in profitability.

Initially opened as Marriott’s Great Adventure 50 years ago, the Great America park has undergone various ownership changes, culminating in its acquisition by Six Flags following Cedar Fair’s merger in 2024. The land, originally public, was sold to real estate firm Prologis in 2022 for $310 million, with an agreement allowing Six Flags to operate until the lease expires in June 2028. However, the company has opted to close the park a year earlier than planned.

Prologis has expressed intent to create a redevelopment plan for the site, collaborating with city officials and design experts to envision a new future for the property. The fate of the attractions and rides remains uncertain as the park prepares for its final operating season.

In addition to Great America’s closure, Six Flags America in Maryland will shut its doors after the 2025 season, as the company positions itself for long-term growth by moving away from locations that do not align with its strategy.

Despite these closures, Six Flags is simultaneously evaluating new opportunities for expansion and improvement in its remaining parks, aiming to revitalize the brand and enhance guest experiences across its portfolio.

The decision to restructure their offerings comes at a time when many businesses are reevaluating their strategies to adapt to changing consumer preferences and economic conditions, presenting a chance for Six Flags to innovate and potentially return stronger in the future.
