Six Flags has made a significant announcement regarding the closure of two of its theme parks, including a definitive end date for one of them.
In a notable departure from the unexpected closure of Kingda Ka at Great Adventure, which will end operations at the close of 2024, Six Flags has provided ample notice about the parks that will be shutting down. New Jersey residents can breathe a sigh of relief as Great Adventure, which recently welcomed the exciting addition of The Flash attraction, is not on the closure list.
Unfortunately, fans of Six Flags in Maryland and California will need to find new venues for their thrill-seeking adventures. Six Flags America, located in Bowie, Maryland, will conclude operations at the end of 2025. Hurricane Harbor Maryland, the accompanying water park, will also cease operations. Both parks will operate on weekends through August, with Six Flags America remaining open for its popular Fright Fest in the fall, concluding its season on November 2, 2025.
In contrast, Six Flags California’s Great America in Santa Clara will continue to welcome guests until at least the end of the 2027 season.
The reasons behind the closures stem from strategic business decisions. Six Flags America is set to close due to plans for property redevelopment. Richard A. Zimmerman, the President & CEO of Six Flags, stated that the park and the water attraction do not align with the company’s long-term growth strategy. Instead, the company aims to generate value through redeveloping the land.
As for Six Flags California’s Great America, its remaining time is tied to an expiring lease, with no plans for extension at this time. Brian Witherow, the Chief Financial Officer, mentioned that both parks ranked low in terms of profitability, further influencing the decision to close.
While it is indeed disappointing for fans and local communities losing beloved theme parks, it’s also a moment for reflection on the evolving landscape of the amusement industry, encouraging a focus on innovation and new experiences in the future.
