Top-ranked Jannik Sinner secured a spot in the U.S. Open final with a 7-5, 7-6 (3), 6-2 win over Jack Draper. This marks Sinner’s first appearance in the finals at the U.S. Open and his second Grand Slam final this year.
The match, held on a humid Friday afternoon, saw both players receive treatment on the court. Sinner, a 23-year-old from Italy who was recently cleared in a doping case, required a wrist massage after a fall during the second set. Draper, a 22-year-old from Britain seeded 25th, vomited twice during the match and received medical attention. The scene at Arthur Ashe Stadium was unusual, with a vacuum cleaning the court as both players took a break.
Sinner, who won the Australian Open in January, will aim for his second Grand Slam title when he faces either No. 12 Taylor Fritz or No. 20 Frances Tiafoe in the final. Fritz and Tiafoe competed in the other men’s semifinal, the first all-American matchup in New York in 19 years. The winner will be the first U.S. man to reach a Slam title match since Andy Roddick in 2009. Additionally, if Fritz or Tiafoe prevails against Sinner, it would mark the first major title for an American man since Roddick’s victory in 2003.
In Saturday’s women’s final, No. 6 Jessica Pegula will face No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus.
