Simone Biles Makes History with Second Olympic Vault Triumph

Simone Biles clinched her second Olympic vault title in Paris on Saturday after flawlessly performing her signature move, the “Biles II.”

Her teammate Jade Carey secured the bronze medal, while Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade took home the silver.

At 27, Biles executed the Yurchenko double pike, the most complex vault in women’s gymnastics, to earn a 15.700 score. Her second vault, a “Cheng” featuring a half-turn onto the vaulting table followed by a 1.5 twist, garnered a 14.900. This resulted in an average score of 15.300, securing her a commanding lead.

Biles joins Vera Caslavska of Czechoslovakia as the second woman to win the vault twice, with Caslavska achieving back-to-back victories in 1964 and 1968. This gold marks Biles’ 10th Olympic medal and seventh gold.

Silver medalist Rebeca Andrade of Brazil and bronze medalist Jade Carey of the United States joined gold medalist Biles on the podium during the medal ceremony for the Women’s Vault Final.

Andrade, Biles’ closest competitor in these Olympics, earned an average score of 14.966 across her two vaults, comfortably securing the silver. The Tokyo vault champion also finished runner-up to Biles in the all-around final and helped Brazil win bronze in the team final.

Jade Carey, who contributed to the U.S. winning the team all-around gold, averaged 14.466 for her vaults—a Cheng and a double-twisting Yurchenko. This bronze adds to her Olympic medal tally, which includes a floor exercise gold from Tokyo and the recent team gold.

Biles will compete in the balance beam and floor exercise finals on Monday, presenting two more opportunities to add to her impressive medal collection in Paris.
