Among the many unsigned players still available is Ben Simmons, who played last season with both the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers. However, his trajectory took a drastic turn following a scrutinized performance in the 2021 playoffs, which led to him sitting out the entire 2021-22 season and facing injuries that hindered his comeback attempts.
Currently, as an unrestricted free agent, Simmons has garnered interest from multiple teams, including the Boston Celtics, Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings, and New York Knicks. Each of these teams is looking to strengthen their point guard depth ahead of the new season. The Suns, in particular, are in need of a veteran ballhandler after losing Tyus Jones to the Magic. While Simmons’ recent production does not match Jones’ contributions, some franchises are willing to take a chance, hoping to tap into the potential he showcased during his early years with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Simmons could thrive in a role off the bench, especially with the high-usage backcourt of Devin Booker and Jalen Green in Phoenix. By relieving some of the playmaking pressure, Simmons could effectively support the offense while also contributing defensively. This strategy aligns with how he could be utilized on any of the teams showing interest. Simmons represents a low-risk, high-reward opportunity, particularly given his previous accolades and just 28 years of age.
However, potential suitors will need to manage expectations carefully due to Simmons’ injury history and periods of ineffective play. Yet, many teams remain hopeful that they can help him rediscover the elite facilitating ability and defensive prowess that once made him a standout player. This scenario presents a chance not only for Simmons to revitalize his career but also for the franchises involved to benefit from his unique skill set if he can regain any semblance of his former self.
