A taxi driver in Sigatoka has been sentenced to 14 months in prison after pleading guilty to possessing 0.133 grams of methamphetamine. Atish Chand Naicker, 29, was convicted for this offense, which occurred on July 30 of the previous year.
Court records indicate that law enforcement discovered Naicker with a clear plastic bag containing white crystals, which were later confirmed to be methamphetamine. Upon noticing the approaching authorities, Naicker attempted to dispose of the bag in a desperate attempt to evade capture. However, he was apprehended and confessed to purchasing the drugs from a known dealer in Cuvu, Sigatoka during subsequent police questioning.
During the court proceedings, Naicker expressed remorse and sought the court’s forgiveness, pledging to avoid future offenses. However, Magistrate Joseph Daurewa stressed the importance of establishing a deterrent for potential offenders, pointing out the rising rates of methamphetamine possession in the area. He remarked, “I do not see any special circumstance to suspend this sentence,” highlighting the seriousness of drug-related crimes.
This case underscores the ongoing struggle against drug-related activities, which continues to pose challenges for authorities in many communities. The sentencing reflects the judicial system’s dedication to tackling drug offenses, with hopes that it sends a strong message to deter future occurrences.
