Sigatoka District School is gearing up to celebrate its rich rugby heritage as two of its promising athletes, Rupeni Raviyawa and James Tuituba, return proudly donned in their Junior All Blacks jerseys. Raviyawa, hailing from Nasama Village in Nadroga and with ties to Nasigatoka Village, now studies at Feilding High School in Wellington, New Zealand. Tuituba follows in a distinguished path, becoming the second alumnus of the SDS Rugby Academy to achieve this significant milestone, further highlighting the Academy’s reputation for producing exceptional rugby talent.
Sevina Tove, the Head of School, stated that the SDS Rugby Academy is committed not only to enhancing rugby skills but also to developing resilience, character, and strength in young men. “These boys are champions on and off the field,” she affirmed. Tove also paid tribute to Ratu Kadavulevu School, which continues to welcome Year 8 students from Sigatoka, fostering their growth both in rugby and academia.
This year, four young boys are preparing for interviews to secure their spots at Ratu Kadavulevu for 2026. Raviyawa and Tuituba also followed this trajectory from Sigatoka District School to Ratu Kadavulevu, eventually earning scholarships in New Zealand. Tove emphasized that this is a testament to the effectiveness of the grassroots rugby development program.
Sigatoka District School has historically been a nurturing ground for national rugby representatives. Notable past players, including Watile Tuinagiagia, Ratu Meli Kurisaru, and Epi Satavu, among others, have helped shape the school’s proud legacy in rugby. To honor this legacy, a dedicated space on the HT Office Sports Achievements Wall will be established.
Framed jerseys and photographs of past alumni who have gone on to represent both local and international clubs will be showcased, serving as a motivational inspiration for future generations. Alongside Raviyawa and Tuituba, other esteemed alumni such as Ratu Jone Ulunisau and Josateki Tuituba continue to shine, further validating that Sigatoka’s Academy not only produces skilled athletes but also well-rounded individuals equipped for success in various facets of life.
