Siemens Mobility and SBB Drive Swiss Rail Digital Interlockings

Siemens Mobility and Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) have entered into a significant long-term framework agreement aimed at digitalizing Switzerland’s interlocking systems. This ambitious project will modernize around 500 interlockings over the next two decades, with an impressive 80 percent of the existing systems set to be replaced. The first of these interlockings is anticipated to be commissioned by 2029.

The agreement encompasses both hardware and software required for complete digital interlockings, alongside a range of Siemens services that include development, training, support, and maintenance. The initial phase of the contract spans ten years, with opportunities for three additional five-year extensions, and a commitment to 25 years of maintenance to ensure seamless operations.

Michael Peter, CEO of Siemens Mobility GmbH, expressed enthusiasm about this collaboration with SBB, emphasizing the role of virtual interlocking systems in transforming rail operations. The innovative Signaling X technology allows for the shifting of interlocking logic to centralized data centers, which significantly enhances network capacity and reliability while playing a vital role in helping SBB meet its climate objectives. This technology promises to ensure system availability of up to 100 percent, facilitating more frequent train services for both passengers and freight in Switzerland.

By centralizing interlocking logic, Siemens Mobility aims to improve operational capacity and develop a sustainable and efficient mobility infrastructure. With decades of experience in Switzerland, Siemens is well-versed in the entire project lifecycle—from development and production to support and spare parts logistics. SBB, which oversees the largest standard-gauge network in Switzerland at 3,266 kilometers, is expected to greatly benefit from this digital transformation, which aligns with its growing mobility requirements and sustainability goals.

This strategic partnership marks a pivotal step in the evolution of Swiss rail transport, ensuring it meets future demands while contributing positively to the environment. The modernization of interlocking systems is poised to not only enhance efficiency but also support Switzerland’s long-term vision for sustainable transportation.
