Sidney Dorsey, the former sheriff of DeKalb County, has died in prison at the age of 86. The Georgia Department of Corrections confirmed that Dorsey passed away from natural causes. He was infamously convicted over two decades ago for orchestrating the assassination of incoming sheriff Derwin Brown, shortly after losing his re-election bid in 2000.

Derwin Brown had won the sheriff position in August 2000 and was mere days from taking office when he was tragically gunned down outside his home on December 15, 2000. At the time of his death, Brown was just 46 years old and left behind a wife and five children. Reports indicate that Brown was shot 12 times as he arrived home, a shocking crime that rocked the community.

The scheme to eliminate Brown was said to have begun almost immediately after Dorsey lost the election. Under scrutiny for corruption during his own tenure, Dorsey allegedly confided in both a chief deputy and an associate about his intent to prevent Brown from taking office. He even went so far as to signal the assassination plot by forming a gun shape with his hand. Dorsey subsequently provided written instructions to a former employee, clearly stating, “Kill Derwin Brown.”

Ultimately, Dorsey enlisted three other individuals to assist in the plot. They reportedly met regularly over three months, planning the assassination as they surveilled Brown’s residence. On the night of the murder, the group executed their plan while waiting near Brown’s home.

The conspiracy unraveled when one accomplice turned against Dorsey, in turn implicating him as the mastermind behind the act. Dorsey was convicted of murder in July 2002 and received a life sentence. In a 2005 ruling, the Georgia Supreme Court upheld his conviction, emphasizing evidence of Dorsey’s corruption during his sheriff tenure.

In a startling confession made in 2007, Dorsey admitted to orchestrating the murder of Brown, affirming his role in one of DeKalb County’s most notorious crimes. Dorsey spent his remaining years at Augusta State Medical Prison before his death.

This grisly chapter in DeKalb County’s history serves as a haunting reminder of the implications of political rivalry and the tragic consequences that can arise from corruption and violence. As this story draws to a close with Dorsey’s passing, it also brings a somber reflection on the loss of life and the impact on the community that continues to endure.
