Apple TV’s beloved comedy series Shrinking has returned for its much-anticipated third season, continuing to mine the complexities of grief and human connection with a fresh take that begins with a wedding instead of ending with one—a twist on traditional storytelling conventions in the genre.

The season premiere features a significant moment as Jimmy’s mentor, Paul—played by the iconic Harrison Ford—decides to marry his girlfriend Julie, marking a pivotal development in the narrative. The choice to start the season with matrimony, as opposed to the typical finale, showcases the creators’ conscious effort to subvert expectations. “We were definitely conscious of that,” reflects Bill Lawrence, who co-created the series alongside Jason Segel, the show’s star, who plays the grieving therapist Jimmy.

Rather than relying on clichéd tropes, the creators aim to execute storylines with a distinct voice. Lawrence, known for having broken ground in sitcoms with shows like Spin City and Scrubs, emphasizes that fresh execution of ideas is more crucial than novelty itself. Notably, both Shrinking and another of Lawrence’s Apple TV ventures, Ted Lasso, are celebrated for their understanding and empathetic portrayals of characters.

The new season also continues to explore the complex relationship between Jimmy and Louis, the man who caused his wife’s death in a drunk-driving incident. Contrary to the trend of prolonged tension in romantic plots, Jimmy’s path toward forgiveness allows for a deeper exploration of healing, a theme underscored by Segel’s commentary on moving forward from trauma. “What we realize at the end of Season 2 is that these guys are actually living in parallel purgatories,” he explains.

Critics and audiences have praised the show for its heartfelt yet realistic approach to difficult topics, including the portrayal of Parkinson’s disease through Ford’s character. The addition of Michael J. Fox—who makes his return to television in a small role—adds layers to the narrative and is a poignant reminder of the realities of living with such a condition. Lawrence recounted his pleasant surprise at Fox’s interest in participating, demonstrating a testament to the show’s relevance and relatability.

While some critiques have surfaced, noting the overly optimistic tone of the show, particularly regarding the bizarre friendship between Jimmy and Louis, both Segel and Lawrence stand by the belief that forgiveness can indeed be a pathway to healing. The balance struck in Shrinking showcases a unique brand of comedy that is rooted in connection and kindness rather than conflict and malice.

As the season unfolds, viewers can look forward to the continuing journey of these empathetic characters, marking Shrinking as a standout series that brings warmth and insight during challenging times.
