Shreyas Iyer in Sydney hospital after splenic injury; medical update awaited

Shreyas Iyer, the Indian cricketer, is currently recovering well in a Sydney hospital after suffering a lacerated spleen during the third ODI against Australia on Saturday. The injury occurred while Iyer was attempting to take a catch in the 34th over, leading to an awkward landing that caused immediate concern.

The 30-year-old batter swiftly clutched his side and received on-field treatment before being transported to the hospital for further assessment. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Iyer’s condition is “medically stable,” though they did not provide a timeline for his return to cricket.

In their statement on Monday, the BCCI explained that Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage while fielding. Diagnostic scans confirmed the laceration of his spleen, and he is currently under medical care. The BCCI medical team, collaborating with specialists from both Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his recovery. The Indian team doctor will stay in Sydney to oversee Iyer’s daily progress.

Despite the concern for Iyer’s health, India secured a nine-wicket victory in the match, although they ultimately lost the three-match ODI series 2-1. Looking ahead, both teams will shift their focus as they prepare for a five-match T20 series, starting in Canberra on Wednesday. This transition offers an opportunity for the Indian squad to regroup and build on their performance while Iyer focuses on his recovery in the coming days.
