Ten individuals sustained injuries during a shooting incident outside Amazura nightclub in Jamaica, Queens, late Wednesday evening. The police are currently investigating the attack, which involved three to four assailants firing more than 30 shots into a crowd of attendees.
The shooting occurred around 11:30 p.m. as a private event was underway, commemorating the life and birthday of Taearion Mungo, a 16-year-old who was fatally shot last year in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Mungo would have turned 17 that day. Among the injured are six women and four men, aged between 16 and 20, all of whom have been taken to nearby hospitals and are expected to recover.
Authorities reported that the suspects fled the scene in a gray Infiniti Q50 with New Jersey license plates, last seen heading onto the Van Wyck Expressway. NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera emphasized the department’s commitment to addressing such violent acts, stating that there is a “zero tolerance” policy toward these incidents.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams also condemned the violence, underscoring that such criminal behavior has no place in the city. The NYPD is investigating the possibility of gang involvement in the shooting, although they have ruled out any connections to terrorism.
In a statement, Amazura nightclub expressed deep sorrow over the incident and conveyed their commitment to cooperating with law enforcement to ensure a full investigation and seek justice for those affected.
This troubling event serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges communities face regarding gun violence, but the resilience shown by the victims, witnesses, and community leaders striving for justice and healing is a hopeful sign that positive changes are possible.
It is critical for community members to continue advocating for solutions that prioritize safety and support efforts aimed at reducing violence in urban areas.
