Seven individuals suffered injuries during a shooting incident that occurred Wednesday evening at Harry Todd Park in Lakewood. The Lakewood Police Department reported that they received multiple 911 calls about the gunfire around 8 p.m., prompting an immediate response from officers.
Upon arrival, law enforcement found five victims with gunshot wounds and provided them with medical assistance until medics from West Pierce Fire and Rescue arrived to transport them to local hospitals. Additionally, two victims later arrived at hospitals independently.
As of Thursday afternoon, the condition of the victims varied significantly. The youngest victim is reported to be 16 years old, while the oldest is 38. One victim, a 38-year-old man, remains in critical condition, whereas two others—a 38-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man—are in serious condition. The four younger victims, ages 16 to 18, are reportedly in stable condition.
Lakewood Police Sgt. Charles Porche expressed concern over the “careless act of violence,” highlighting that innocent bystanders were caught in the crossfire during a family-friendly event at the park. “It is one of the great tragedies,” he stated, reflecting on the disruption of good weather and the park’s intended safe atmosphere.
Detectives investigating the shooting believe it stemmed from a dispute between two groups, which escalated to gunfire but have yet to identify any suspects. They are currently looking into the relationship between the shooter and the victims to determine whether the attack was targeted.
Mayor Jason Whalen and the Lakewood City Council issued a statement expressing their sorrow over this “senseless act of violence.” They affirmed their commitment to public safety and are considering enhancing security at parks during busy times to ensure residents and visitors feel secure.
The community remains hopeful that the police will bring those responsible to justice and that healing can begin for the victims and those affected by the incident. The situation underscores the importance of ensuring public spaces remain safe for all.
